| A Word About Who We Are... | |||||||||
| Episcopalians are a
part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Anglican Church's
roots are deeply imbedded in the planting of the early church in the
British Isles. Much is made of King Henry VIII's role in what is called
the founding of the Church of England. Whereas the church's
governance and polity dates back to the reign of Henry VIII, its
spiritual, sacramental, and theological roots go much deeper.
Suffice it to say the life of the Body of Christ in the British Isles
and in Ireland have always marched to the tune of a different
drummer. It is what makes it a unique expression of Christianity,
so misunderstood by outsiders and so beloved by adherents.
The Episcopal Church, as part
of the Anglican Communion, is catholic in its sacramental life as well
as in its polity. It is protestant in its fierce independence from
the Bishop of Rome, yet has married elements of both Catholic and
Reformation theology. At any given liturgy you'll find people of
every race, political view, and economic background side by side at the
celebration of the Eucharist--worshipping in common prayer and
endeavoring to be the Body of Christ. |
