Fire Facts from November, 1973

The windows that survived were not all that was left after the fire of 1973.  The church's silver was rescued from the fire, as were the church hangings and vestments.  The lectern was found upright in the basement with the bible still on it.  The pulpit (given in 1885) collapsed into the basement, and the original marble was destroyed.  Though the hottest part of the fire was located just a few feet from the main altar, it was spared damage.  The woodwork surrounding the Sanctuary is all that was left of the 1884 interior.  It too survived the flames and water; small miracles in the midst of great destruction.  Lost were original church records dating back to the founding of the parish, the tracker organ, and wall memorials.
